Penang Peranakan Mansion

This house gives you a really feel for how influential Peranakan's were in the late 19th early 20th century. In it's day it needed 15 servants to keep it running as a family home and a centre for business. Not always legal business, by all accounts. Terrible tales of daring do.

The inside can only be described as sumptuous. Iron work from Glasgow, blown glass from Stourbridge, ceramics from China. The ceramics are Chinese but to the distinctive local designs using pale greens and pink.

The conducted tour was interestingly done with 2 hours passing unnoticed. New insights including the symbolism of granite. All the bottom steps were of granite, ensuring a firm and sure beginning.
